Meet Anja Brandon

driven environmental engineer and policy expert, working to end plastic pollution

Leading plastics policy advocate

I’m Anja Brandon. I work on policy solutions to end plastic pollution as the Associate Director of U.S. Plastics Policy at Ocean Conservancy.

I’ve helped draft landmark state and national legislation to regulate plastics, including as part of the team of environmental advocates that helped draft and pass the strongest plastics legislation in the country, SB 54 in California, for which I was named one of Fast Company's Most Creative People 2023.

I’ve spent countless hours in the lab and in the field to understand the devastation unfolding in our ocean – from quantifying microplastic pollution in the Pacific Ocean to leading research on break down plastic waste. And I have dedicated my career to being part of the solution through effective and ambitious science policy.

Prior to joining Ocean Conservancy, I was the AGU/AAAS Congressional Science Fellow in the office of U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR), where I served as the lead policy advisor on issues including plastics, ocean and water pollution, and toxic pollutants.

Environmental engineer and material scientist

I earned my B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering and Science at Stanford University. I was awarded a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship for my doctoral research on plastic waste management challenges and plastic-degrading bacteria.

My areas of expertise include plastic waste management, material science and polymer chemistry, environmental engineering fundamentals, and science communication.
